4:20 p.m.

420 Day

Have you ever smelled something weird while you are walking down the street? That strange odor could be marijuana (we usually call it ‘weed’). Smoking weed is a kind of common thing in Vancouver’s culture. It is illegal, but actually nobody cares. You can easily see someone who smokes weed in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. However, there is one special day that you can see almost 5,000 people gathering together and smoking weed. It is a nice chance to experience new culture. Don’t be scared, just enjoy.

Origin

There are many urban myths about the origin of this day. However, the true origin is this one. 1971, there were group of students who smoke weed. They usually got together when the school finished. It was 4:20 p.m. After that, they secretly called marijuana as 420, so other people are hard to notice their meaning. It became popular, and it is the origin of the marijuana day.

When and Where

When is pretty obvious because I mentioned more than twice in this blog, and look at the name of this special day. 420. It starts at April 20 4:20 p.m. And pot (another name for marijuana) smokers smoke in one public place, Art Gallery.

GG (Gay Gay pride parade)

The Gay Pride Parade

Every year hot people are coming out on the street in August. Do you want to join? Sure, no problem. On August gay people have their own special parade. It’s called “Gay Pride Parade”, if you are from a culture that is a little conservative, well, no problem! Are you homophobic? Well, no problem too! This parade never forces you to be gay. All it wants is please accept gay people. Why not enjoy this nice chance to see Vancouver’s gay friendly culture and gay culture?

Goal

It is their goal that other people know their right to love, and their love is not different from heterosexual. Yeah, we can say this parade’s goal is increase awareness. Actually I can tell this parade is kind of celebration, because Canada is so gay friendly country. There are so many gay people in Vancouver and most Vancouverites have gay friend. Furthermore gay marriage is also accepted in country. That’s why they do the parade here. Anyway, when you first heard about that parade you might think it is indecent, however it is totally different from what you imagined Vancouver citizens are willing to go with their kids. If they think it is indecent they would never bring their kids. Yeah, it is true that some of them are naked, and some of them wear too sexy clothes to show your kids, but it can’t be a big problem or excuse that you don’t attend this fabulous festival. It is just a small part of the festival. You can see people who wear amazing clothing, Royal Canadian Mountain Police, some gay organization, politicians, and unknown useful knowledge about them.

Information

2010, The Pride Parade will start on Sunday August 1st. This parade will start at the middle of the downtown Vancouver, and it will end at the Sunset Beach Festival Site. It starts at 12 o’clock. You’d better bring sunglasses and hat to avoid hot sunshine, because it will be a pretty long parade. I can tell Robson Street is the best place to observe this parade.

Here is the picture of the Parade route which will help you understand more about this parade.
Oh, and please don’t forget that it’s better to arrive the festival site early, because last year more than 600,000 people attend to see this gorgeous and there are more people who waited this festival since last year.

Many ESL (English as a Second Language) students are look forward to see this festival, so why don’t you join the club?
